
Maria Caruana is a B.A. Youth and Community Studies (Hons) graduate, class of 2015, with 9 years of experience in the social field. She specialises in substance and behavioural addictions and their effects, driven by a passion to understand and support individuals facing these challenges.
Throughout her career, Maria has guided people toward healthier, more balanced lives, and has assisted individuals with addictions in both criminal and civil legal procedures. She works closely not only with those affected but also with their support systems, ensuring better outcomes. Maria emphasises that effective communication and strong relationships between professionals and service users are vital to encourage long-term wellbeing while providing immediate support in case of relapse.
Maria has collaborated with a wide range of professionals, including Probation Officers, Psychiatrists, Police Officers, Legal Professionals, and Child Protection Specialists, enriching her understanding of different addictions, their symptoms, and their effects. She participates in ongoing training to stay up-to-date with emerging illicit substances and behavioural addictions, as well as their short- and long-term impacts.
Her approach is holistic, focusing on supporting the individual while engaging those genuinely involved in the service user’s life to foster better understanding and relationships.
Maria is currently pursuing a Master’s in Mediation Studies at the University of Malta.
